All major airlines fly to Istanbul. Lufthansa flies to Izmir from Munich.

COMPSAC participants will most likely fly in to Izmir’s Adnan Menderes Airport, just 10 miles (15km) to the conference hotel. There are three options for transportation from the airport to the city:
• Airport shuttles (HAVAŞ) meet incoming flights and go to and from the city center for 10 TL (be sure to get off the bus in the centre of town, as the bus continues north to Tersane).
• Public buses run by ESHOT, transportation department of city council, are cheaper than Havaş, at 4 TL/passenger.
• The suburban train line (İzban) connects the airport with Alsancak Station in city centre, north of Konak Square with intervals of about 15 minutes between 6AM and 11:30PM. It's possible to transfer to the metro in Halkapınar station (which is, indeed, the last station for some of the services) for trips further into the city centre, e.g. Konak Square.

Flights to Istanbul

Several local airlines fly routes between Izmir and Istanbul, including:
Turkish Airlines
Pegasus (flypgs.com)
Atlasjet (atlasjet.com)
Onur Air (onurair.com)
Sky Airlines
Sun Airlines
Anadolu Jet

Bus travel to Istanbul:

Another option is to use a bus or train to travel to Istanbul from Izmir, but the travel time is much longer than by flight, up to 10 hours. Overnight bus trips are available between the two cities, departing at 10-11pm and arriving in the morning.
Tips for Touring in Izmir

Walk Izmir is an interesting website about self-guided walking tours in the city. Their website has mapped routes for walking, as well as information about interesting sites to visit in Izmir.

Offering a whole different angle for viewing the city, Teleferik is a cable car lift rising up to the altitude of 420 m above sea level, offering a wide panorama above the Aegean Sea and the city. For great views combined with historical sights, see also Kadifekale, an old castle standing on a hilltop. Another famous sight in Izmir is the clock tower of Konak Square, which is considered the symbol of the city. Besides that, the city hosts several good museums such as the Antalya Archaeology Museum, which introduces you ancient sarcophagi and statues. Landscapes outside the city are formed of forests and olive plantations, which make touring outside Izmir quite interesting. The area introduces you also former fishing villages and remains of ancient civilization dating back for thousands of years.

Additional information about the city of Izmir can be found on the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality webpage.

Tourism Centers/Guides

Izmir visitors will find that obtaining tourist information in the area is easy. Instead of there being only one tourist information center, there are actually numerous locations where visitors can get their questions answered about everything from accommodations to current events. These information centers are conveniently located in areas which tourists will probably already be exploring. The most obviously easy to reach of these offices is the one located at the Adnan Menderes Airport, which is where most travelers enter upon arrival in Izmir. Travelers who do not come through the airport, may find that the tourist information center most conveniently located to them is the one standing between the famous Hilton and Buyuk Efes hotels in the center of Izmir. Visitors who are not staying in this area may find that the smaller, but still informative, booth located just behind the Clock Tower is convenient, since most tourists eventually stop to see the Tower.
Travelers will find that all of these different visitor’s centers will provide them with brochures about the area. They also have free maps for anyone interested in trying to orient themselves to finding the major tourist attractions of the area. More information is available on the main tourist website for Izmir.

Tipping is customary at hotels and restaurants and for guides and drivers during tours.
